There’s no time to stand pat. Facing a playoff chase in an increasingly-tough division, the Atlanta Firebirds acquired a big name reinforcement for their defense.
For the price of three young prospects, the Firebirds acquired defensive end Danielle Hunter fro Oakland. Hunter is regarded as one of the league’s premier pass rushers, but he has been limited to one sack so far for the expansion Odyssey. The Firebirds are confident he’s ready to explode on a defense where he’ll be surrounded by top talent like Aldon Smith, Grady Jarrett, and Ethan Westbrooks.
“It’s not every day you get a chance to pick up a player of Danielle’s caliber, plus I’ve known many gorgeous women named Danielle, so I’ve got a soft spot there,” said Atlanta coach Rob Ryan. “We think he’s going to step right in and kick our pass rush up a notch or four.”
Heading to the Odyssey are defensive tackle Tanzel Smart, running back Josh Adams, and offensive lineman Tyler Catalina.
“It’s a steep price to pay,” said Ryan. “Those are three guys we hold in high regard, but we’re chasing a championship. Those guys were key depth, but we want a ring, and at the same time they’ll all get a chance to shine.”
Hunter makes his Atlanta debut this week as the 3-2 Firebirds travel to face the 1-4 Seattle Orcas.
