Iowa Trims Final Roster Down to 50
A day after the Threshers disappointing 18-13 loss to the San Diego Diablos, the team announced it’s final cuts as the SFL gets ready to celebrate another season of football.
The most notable among today’s cuts were RB Justin Davis, OLB’s Josh Carraway and Eric Striker, as well as MLB Stevan Daniels.
Davis, a 2017 7th Round pick in 2017, came into training camp fighting an uphill battle for carries. With Orleans Darkwa set to take on the lion’s share and rookies Akrum Wadley and Roc Thomas looking good in the SFL D-League with Hartford, many saw this one coming. Davis struggled in his rookie season, averaging only 3.0 yards a carry on 49 carries.
Carraway was acquired from Dallas last season and never could really establish himself in Iowa. He finished 2017 with only 12 tackles. The team went out this off-season and upgraded their OLB group, adding Samson Ebukam via trade, Dennis Gardeck in the draft, and recently adding Kenneth Olugbode after the veterans combine.
Striker was a primary backup last season and looked to be in the same role again this year until the team signed Olugbode last week. With 7 OLB coming into came, it was a likely position to see some subtractions going into the year. The team clearly chose to go with youth over experience this year.
Daniels also lost a battle of youth versus experience. Daniels contributed 19 tackles to the squad in 2017, but with the acquisitions of Josey Jewell and Ben Niemann, the team chose to go with youth.
Others who won’t make the Week 1 roster include, FB Marquez Williams, WR Noel Thomas, OT Nolan MacMillan, CB Ray Buchanan Jr., and S Max Redfield.
