The Youngstown Steel finishes the 2018 season with a loss, bringing their record to 8-8 on the season, a franchise best.

The Steel’s only lead came in the 1st quarter when Daniel Martinez knocked one threw the uprights. They had to play catch up the entire game after that. Christian Hackenberg threw a 37 yard bomb to Jimmy Ralph in the 2nd quarter to bring the score back to a one possession game, 14-10. Unfortunately Chicago struck back with two scores so Youngstown was trailing 24-10 at halftime.

After a Hackenberg 40 yard strike to Dillon Salva, his first touchdown on the season, Youngstown was back within one score 27-17 with 3:52 left in the 3rd quarter. An exchanging of field goals left the Steel with 7:47 left in the game to try and tie the game, but they could not get anything going and lost 27-20.

This season was much better than last season, so the fans should be pleased and excited about the future of the franchise and the SFL D-League.

Hackenberg had another 300 yard passing game, throwing for 340 yards and 2 touchdowns. Salva led the squad with 97 receiving yards. Since the Steel were down the entire game, the running game was non existent.

Frederic Chagnon was the defensive leader in the game, racking up 9 tackles and a deflection. Richard Johnson, the former Howard standout added another sack to his stat total on the season.

The Youngstown Steel will be in the playoffs for the first time, looking to make a splash in round 1 against the #14 Seed, Tallahassee. Youngstown received the 11th seed.
