One step forward, two steps back. Coming off a promising loss to the juggernaut Orlando Rockets, the Atlanta Firebirds saw their losing streak extend to three games with a stunning 32-26 loss to the expansion Miami Mustangs.
Atlanta held a 26-23 lead with under five minutes to play, but yielded a late field goal to tie it and gave up a 75-yard touchdown pass in overtime for the loss.
“Unacceptable. There’s no way around it,” said Coach Rob Ryan. “Hats off to Miami, but our effort on defense today was pathetic, and that’s on me.”
Matt Barkley completed 22 of 38 passes for 276 yards and 2 touchdowns in the loss. Robert Davis hauled in 9 catches for 102 yards and a score. Cameron Meredith caught 4 passes for 98 yards and a touchdown.
Matt Breida ran for 75 yards and a score on 23 carries.
The defense was gouged for 422 yards and 3 touchdowns through the air. Among the few highlights were Danielle Hunter’s two sacks and one apiece from Aldon Smith and Ronald Blair.
