Shortly after the announcement had been made that the Spring Football League would be expanding to Jacksonville; the newly founded Stingrays announced that they had hired former Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback, Detroit Lions General Manager, and Florida State alumni Martin Mayhew as the teams Executive Vice President of Football Operations. The franchise then swiftly moved in and swooped up Florida legend Steve Spurrier as its head coach. Spurrier, recently coming off an AAF championship for a league that folded prematurely due to money issues, was elated to be offered the job in Jacksonville.
“I’m still extremely interested in teaching and coaching football.” said Spurrier; “Jacksonville is a great city and one that I have a lot of experience coaching and winning in.”
During his time at Florida, Spurrier and the Gators were 9-1 against the Bulldogs in Jacksonville (11-1 total.)
“I was a bit surprised when I received no interest from the Miami expansion team last year and even more so when Larry Coker retired from Orlando. Jacksonville works out even better for me though. I’m only an hour or so from Gainesville, so my work with the University of Florida won’t be in jeopardy during the off-season, and I’ll also be right down the street from the PGA’s headquarters and the TPG Sawgrass golf course in Ponte Vedra. This is an ideal situation for me and my family.”
Martin Mayhew had a similar attitude about working in Jacksonville; “I’m a local guy, I’m a Florida guy.” said Mayhew; “I grew up about 90 miles south of here in Daytona. I’m really looking forward to working with coach Spurrier and hopefully putting a winning team on the field.”
When asked how it was to be working with the enemy, both men virtually replied: “We still hold those rivalries, both this is professional.”
The Stingrays have also announced a financial partnership with popular fast food chain Chick-fil-a as well as Jacksonville grocery retailer Winn-Dixie.
Now that the team has been founded, announced, and is ready to go, coach Spurrier and his scouts will be getting ready for the territorial draft and scouting for the upcoming common draft. The team will also start assembling a coaching staff.
